Is Ethos of Poetry Lost or Gained?

poetry ethos

In this microscopic world of Twitter and Instagram, where we articulate our thoughts in bite- sized spaces. What is that essence of words which resonated for centuries through diaries now having a digital vision lead to?

Life has been an ongoing tale of mystery spiced up with a battle of sweetness and sourness. Often people used to sit down to pour their feelings into words after a long day. The moment of happiness is probably an assurance, that the soul seeks inwardly. Well, over the years, that has been not just a refuge, but a place where you could be yourself unjudged.

Small group of people gathered to celebrate poetry recalling the legends of their times and also appreciate the new that weaved a tale of their own. Now spoken poetry has taken over riding on their voices that sometimes dilute the very words it meant to share. It is being broken, sneered and also slammed(Slam poetry).

Writing itself was a intricate voyage of mind and heart that would sync the writer with his/her readers. Does it always today? The once long poems that would be occupy page(s) now confines to a mere few lines. Do we blame our attention capacity now or feelings have been too chaotic to infuse a ‘Sonnet‘ or more complex ‘Villanelle’. Grammar which was once an essence of impactful poetry is hammered in the name of humour, instant gratification. It has successfully developed a niche to read quick poetry having its own cult status.

Today, the definition of being cool and in the league demands we whip a new dish not knowing whether it deserves more salt or sugar. In era of digitization, poetry has got itself into its own Rebranding. It has been boon for many of them who get a chance to share their work getting them more visibility and connected community. Eg: Insta Posts, haikus.

In gamut of writing, and the whirlwind world of publishing, which took ages (read :months or even years), today poets have entered the world of literary festivals, writing contests, anthologies etc. Self publishing has thus created its own niche justifying its ethos.

Pandorathon- 14-May 2020- Break Up Letter – A Closure

break up rust

Dear Q,

Hi, there Q. Surprised aren’t you to find this letter . Well, I am too, considering the fact that since  last we met, we left leaving many questions, doubts hanging  in midair and cared less to answer or even oblige it.

Does the expresso coffee still remind you of those bitter coffee beany allegations we perfectly mouthed at each other. You know Q, from the time we have separated, do you actually realize we haven’t been sleeping on time or eating right and even coming up the weirdest possible excuses to stay away for a project. Hugs to those memories when we were added different layouts and frames to beautify our Love rather than keeping  a default set-up and pale faces. It doesn’t work that way right?

I am writing this to finally put words to our infinite silences, awkward glances, sly blinks that have been courting through a rough patch. I do owe  all that you very well introduced me that opened my perspective in different aspects of life. I am trying hard to avoid the gazes that you put across like a hot blazing cocoa and also managing myself to stop milking those past memories.

But, we cannot remain tagged together in every slide but present our faces separately to the world and specially to our shunted egos. Can we?

Regards

Your last slide

Pandorathon-12- May 2020-Are you Named as “Elvira”

elvira name

You know there is some strong connection between us Elvira. I just wonder how chronologically different yet the moments were similar. I was always intrigued when others mentioned the meaning of their name at school or when teachers said.. Be true to your name. When I was in school, I had one of my friend always addressing as El-vayh-ruh unlike other classmates. One day, when I asked her, she confided much to my amusement about a Elf story she had known. And that’s where my mission began.

I asked my mother who told me that Dad named me from a beautiful Names book, though until then she had chosen something beautiful from P. But surprisingly to this day, she doesn’t recollect that name as she loved this name more. How mom, why can’t you?She says it was beautiful name-Was it Priya, Pearl or Patricia (there) I asked her back then. Mama, sure you could write it down somewhere, but all she says.. I loved Elvira instantly … But yeah that could be Patricia too.

My dad’s mom name is Elizabeth so my dad chose Elvira, what could it mean was my new found obsession after school. I pestered my Dad, a man of few words challenged me , it’s meaning can be found in any dictionary. What! But I wouldnt give up. I daily checked some amazing words and showed if it may be the chosen one. But ans was simply No.
Later that quest was fulfilled by intro of Internet. I Googled my name. Obviously now, you know it’s meaning. I did find Elvira-mistress of the dark, the mention of elves. I was too ecstatic that I actually downloaded the “Oak Ridge Boys’ original song and played it everyday. For one of her class, my sister told me she has Elvira at home and Elveera as partner in school. From that day, whenever I used to meet her, I used to wear such a bright smile to greet Elveera that my sis called it sometimes too creepy.

Apart from my regular day-dreaming that I do to this very day, I searched about meaning of #Elvira and there were zillion of searches – meaning white or beautiful, its Spanish origin, it’s history and popularity etc. At one point of time, I was even obsessed with Spanish language, Spanish songs, team Spain of Fifa.

But when I discussed with Dad, he said you are yet to seek its real meaning. Ah! Then, one day I triumphed with most obvious word I ignored until then. Elvira means Truth in Spanish . I actually celebrated like I had won a war and my mother thought her girl had gone cuckoo.Truly, I was felt special for an introvert like me who found her zen.

Today, I am addressed by all possible nicknames starting with Elvi, Elu, Elu blue, Aloe-kobo, Aloevera, Ellie etc. Over the years, I got a chance to see few Elveeras’. But for the 1st time, I got a chance to interact with ‘Elvira’ here in TSL group who writes about her magical world, a perfect fantasy for dreamer like me.

Flash back- After my elaborate research and findings of achieving a feat of knowing my name, my sister was lured into this. Her name was selected by Dad from that same book… And all she finds closer to her name is surnames but no exact meaning or spelling. She has given up pacifying herself it is unique. But I get a chance to tell her… You are incomplete without me… which has the entire name except two letters.

P. S : That beautiful name book is still mystery!

Written with an intention to explore the world around my name “#Elvira” and the tryst to find/met more Elvira’s then and now and possible future 🙂

Pandorathon-9-May 2020- Ghazal-Bring it on My Love

Bring it on my love, time stands still

To bear witness to the feelings you have built

Light up your world with a vigour renewed

Move beyond the past, enjoy the future’s thrill

Bring it on my love, time has taken its pace

Previously your beloved, now just another face

Remember Love doesn’t heal on its own

You need to act upon, preservance needs to be shown

Bring it on my love, time has been vanished and spent

Enough tears of pain shed and shoulders lent

Kindle your energy by making  ‘Love’ your friend

Do not blame, abandon or abolish based on one chapter that just took an abrupt end.

Prompt– #Ghazal on the theme- Love

Pandorathon-7-May 2020- A Chance Encounter

The whole town at come to a standstill on this weekend . The usual hustle of cars vrooming was absent and surprisingly this road wore a deserted look. The only occupied canopy in a small outlet was crowded by an airhostess who has missed her flight, a pirate who was scouting for his next ship, a drunkard who had managed to climb up the tree house, a writer who wandered like his dreams and most shocking was to a find Politician who had crept into a chair as his car broke down a mile ago, nowhere to go. He was the only one frantically calling up his subordinates to make arrangements to get him out of this mess. The air hostess was grumpy at the carbs she must have put on as just a while ago she binged on a cheese toast, French fries and medium sized bugger . The pirate and drunkard looked lost in this bunch offering each other baits to come up with an appealing idea to reach the city. The writer sat hunched at his laptop with no wifi , just editing his last work of poetry.

The politician made an announcement, that whosoever he considers worthy will get a chance to join him to the only seat available in the cab that was arrive anytime soon. The pirate lunged at this opportunity by quoting prices of oil refineries and cruises best known to him that bring fortunes to politician and lead him out. The drunkard offered his references at every bar and wine shops he knew to get a discount for the get-together the politician regularly had at his bungalow. The airhostess coyly volunteered to provide the best services to all his staff and guests under her purview and also assuring his private aircraft gets a green signal at all times. The politician was surprised at the writer who whimsically didn’t partake in this offer and nudged him to do so.

The car arrived and the Politician told the writer to tag along. All were shocked and peeked into the laptop screen ,which read as “Am I not your write -hand man who would curate all your speeches?”.
